Braiding Past and Present at Old World Wisconsin

Today was a day I’ll never forget. I had the honor of visiting Old World Wisconsin to give three presentations throughout the day, and it was such an amazing opportunity to share the story of my people, the Oneida Nation.

The title of my presentation was "Braiding Past and Present," and that’s exactly what I aimed to do: weave together the threads of history, culture, and lived experience.

I began by sharing that we are a part of the Haudenosaunee, the story of our removal from our original homelands and how we came to settle where we now live in Wisconsin. I talked about what it means to live on a reservation today, and how that experience is shaped by both the strength of our ancestors and the ongoing efforts to maintain our identity and ways of life. I talked about my experience through the Oneida School System.

One of the parts that resonated deeply with many guests was our family’s journey with growing traditional Oneida white corn. I explained how this isn’t just planting and harvesting, it’s a full-year process rooted in ceremony, community, and purpose. Every step, from seed saving to drying and storage, is connected to our values and teachings.

I also spoke about my beadwork, how I discovered it, what it means to me, and how it’s become more than just an art form. It’s a passion, a way to reconnect with my culture, and a tool for teaching and storytelling. Through my raised beadwork, I’ve found a way to honor my ancestors while creating something beautiful and meaningful in the present.

I’m so grateful to Old World Wisconsin for welcoming me and giving me a space to share these important stories. It was a beautiful day filled with good conversations, meaningful exchanges, and a reminder of how powerful our stories can be when we speak them out loud.
